December 29 Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!I'm not just a mommy to 6 dogs, 2 cats, 1 rabbit, 3 ducks and 25 chickens. Hubby and I are also EMT's & Hubby is a volunteer firefighter with 2 departments. As this is a holiday weekend where alcohol is rampant, people get a little crazy and Public Service personnel are taken forgranted, I would just like for you to take a minute to appreciate those in Public Service who are here for you.
Life in EMS... It's late; you are sleeping well, the phone rings in the middle of the night. You quickly rush to get on your way, your help is needed. A family's house is on fire. I wish you could know what it is like to search a burning bedroom for trapped children at 3 AM, flames rolling above your head, your palms and knees burning as you crawl, the floor sagging under your weight as the kitchen below you burns. I wish you could comprehend a wife's horror at 6 in the morning as I check her husband of 40 years for a pulse and find none. I start CPR anyway, hoping to bring him back, knowing intuitively it is too late. But wanting his wife and family to know everything possible was done to try and save his life. I wish you knew the unique smell of burning insulation, the taste of soot-filled mucus, the feeling of intense heat through your turnout gear, the sound of flames crackling, the eeriness of being able to see absolutely nothing in dense smoke-sensations that I've become too familiar with. I wish you could read my mind as I respond to a building fire, is this a false alarm or a working fire? How is the building constructed? What hazards await me? Is anyone trapped? Or to call and ask what is wrong with the patient? Is it minor, or life threatening? Is the caller really in distress or is he waiting for me with a 2x4 or a gun? I wish you could be in the emergency room, as a doctor pronounces dead, the beautiful five-year old girl that I have been trying to save during the past 25 minutes, knowing she will never go on her first date or say the words, "I love you Mommy", ever again. I wish you could know the frustration I feel in the cab of the engine, ambulance, or my personal vehicle, my foot pressing down hard on the gas pedal, as you fail to yield the right-of-way at an intersection or in traffic. When you need me however, your first comment upon my arrival will be, "It took you forever to get here!" I wish you could know my thoughts as I help extricate a girl of teenage years from the remains of her automobile. What if this was my daughter, sister, my wife or a friend? What were her parents’ reactions going to be when they open the door to find a police officer with hat in hand? I wish you could know how it feels to walk in the back door and greet my parents and family, not having the heart to tell them that I nearly did not come back from the last call. I wish you could know how it feels dispatching officers, firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics out and when we call for them, our heart drops because no one answers back. Or to hear a bone chilling 911 call of a child or wife needing assistance. I wish you could feel the hurt as people verbally and sometimes physically abuse us or belittle what I do, or as they express their attitudes of "It will never happen to me". I wish you could realize the physical, emotional and mental drain of missed meals, lost sleep and forgone social activities. In addition to all the tragedy my eyes have seen, I wish you could know the brotherhood and self-satisfaction of helping save a life or preserving someone's property, or being able to be there in time of crisis, or creating order from total chaos. I wish you could understand what it feels like to have a little boy tugging at your arm and asking, "Is my Mommy okay?” not even being able to look in his eyes without tears from your own and not knowing what to say, or to have to hold back a long time friend who watches his buddy having CPR done on him as they take him away in the ambulance. You know all along he did not have his seat belt on. A sensation that I have become too familiar with. Unless you have lived with this kind of life, you will never truly understand or appreciate who I am, we are, or what our job really means to us...I wish you could though. APPRECIATE AND SUPPORT THE LOCAL EMS WORKERS, 911 DISPATCHERS, FIREFIGHTERS, and LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IN YOUR AREA. ONE DAY THEY'LL PROBABLY BE SAVING YOUR PROPERTY OR YOUR OWN LIFE. WHEN YOU SEE THEM COMING WITH LIGHTS FLASHING, MOVE TO THE RIGHT QUICKLY, and THEN PRAY FOR THEM! Take Care!!!! December 28 The Anniversary DateHubby and I decided to celebrate our anniversary a little early this year. We did our usual ritual of eating lunch at our favorite restaurant where we had our first date and then slammed the movie theaters. This year we decided to catch a double feature and we both picked a movie we wanted to see. Hubby chose "We Are Marshall" which was a movie I also wanted to see. It was so moving and yet very inspiring as well. I loved the movie and encourage everyone else to go see it as well. Both Matthew's were fantastic and gave Oscar-worthy performances. It must be difficult to portray other people who are still living and to be able to do them justice. The whole cast was just awesome and it didn't hurt that our next door neighbor's son was in the film as an extra. He was a football player on the newly formed team and we got to see him in the background many times. I would love to see this movie again.
My pick was "Night at the Museum". I loved it. I'm a huge Ben Stiller and Robin Williams fan, but I also am a sucker for comedies. The movie was full of adventure as well as a bit of history and family moments. Mickey Rooney is also in this movie and I loved seeing him do his schtick. I laughed at Rooney's outbursts and name-calling, and cherished the fact that this man is still acting into his mid-80's. I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed this movie and would DEFINITELY go see it again.
As you can tell, I'm a huge movie nut. Hubby says we have enough movies to start our own rental business if that tells you anything. I have been longing to see The Black Dahlia since I knew it was being filmed. Well, to my delight, the movie arrived today in the mail from one of those rental places. I can't believe this movie. I was a little disappointed in the film. The acting was fantastic and I LOVED Hilary Swank in this but the storyline was not what I thought it would be. The plot did not center around the Dahlia as I'd imagined and it was a little hard to follow at times. Brian De Palma did a superb job in directing this picture, but it's not what I'd call Oscar-worthy. I'm still ready to read James Ellroy's novel of the same name. As they always say, the book is ALWAYS better than the movie and for this one, I hope so.
I'm honored to be featured as MSN Spaces of the Week. I hope those of you who are stopping by for the first time will return to read more. Take care!!!! December 27 The Remains of Christmas DayI hope you all had a great Christmas. Ours was enjoyable and we enjoyed being with family. Bella got 2 dresses, 2 t-shirts, a little football jersey (Go Dawgs) and a football toy that freaks her out. She's not too keen about it but I think she'll come around. Mom got her a bag of dog biscuit mix. My puppy is too spoiled! Weenie is still recouperating but is doing fairly well. At least she's able to walk again. She's going to be coming inside permanently as soon as she finishes her medication. She has to be caged up for 2 weeks while her back is healing. Rose and Mini-Me are doing fine. I worry that Mini-Me is going to have back problems in the years to come since he's so long. London, our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is about 20 pounds and likes to play kinda rough. Abbey, also a Pembroke, is doing well. She's all about being a momma's baby.
Hubby liked the gifts I got him and I liked everything I got as well. We got all of the decorations, the tree and the Village packed up and put away for another year. It was a little sad, but I'm thrilled to have my house starting to be put back in order. Since Hubby's working tomorrow, I'm going to be putting stuff away, and cleaning house. Ahhhh relaxation for me!
You'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out what we did for our anniversary. We had a blast! Oh, I did manage to get some new books for Christmas. Mary Kay Andrews's Blue Christmas and Savannah Breeze. I also got Black Dahlia from my brother and I look forward to reading it. I really need to get back to reading. I've got about 10 books that I need to read not to mention the new ones I'm hoping to read that get released in '07!
Take care! December 20 Let it Snow????????? Where????I have been so remiss about blogging lately. As you know, the holidays manage to drive you bonkers and it's impossible to regroup until the second week in January. I do apologize though about my lack of blog walking and blogging in general. Seems that the weather here has become the Anti-winter. I guess it's the global warming. It's hard for me to get in the Christmas spirit when it's in the 70's outside. Where's the snow???? Who do I have to pay to get snow these days??? Old Man Winter must be sleeping again. I guess Frosty the Snowman is just plain Coolie the Waterman. LOL Sick humor, I know. The house is decorated, the tree is up and the yard is decorated. Kind of a conservative Christmas Vacation though.
Bella is doing well. She's still in the middle of the housebreaking phase, but she's doing fine. Hubby has her growling and barking which he finds amusing and I'm working hard to break her of that habit. What do you do? Punish the hubby? I've talked to him about stopping that behavior, but he refuses to listen and pouts when he doesn't get his way. I think he needs a "Time Out". Bella really is growing though. I hadn't really noticed until she came and tried to jump on the bed which is about 3 feet off the floor. She can reach the mattress now! LOL
Weenie, one of our miniature Dachshunds, has hurt her back and is now confined to a kennel and is on steroids. It's not uncommon for Dachshunds to have back problems, but Weenie isn't overweight (per the vet) and it's probably from her playing so rough with the other dogs. She's not too happy right now, but she's feeling so much better and the Vet had a great prognosis for her recovery. When she's all better, she'll be spayed and she'll be an INDOOR dog only. She's been an inside/outside dog for nearly 5 years and she loves to play in the fenced yard, but no more of that for her. She is Hubby's baby so I guess she's going to be spoiled even more than she already is.
Work is just awesome and amazing!!! I still can't fully comprehend how happy I am at work. This will be my last day here for the rest of the year and it's killing me! I can already see that I'll be coming back on my vacation just to check in and pick up messages. I KNOW I'll probably be back Friday and we'll see about next week. For now though...Take care! December 10 Pictures Galore!!!!I expect this will be a hectic week. We have 3 Christmas parties to go to AND I have an all day training class tomorrow. Bella's doing fantastic and has only had a few accidents. Nothing major though. She's having a blast with ALL of her new toys. She's so excited she isn't sure which ones to play with. I finally got some pictures uploaded here in the photo album. I have an album for Bella and one for my Christmas Village that I was telling you about. I've got most of the candy made and the sausage balls. I've just got the haystacks to make and some Chex Mix and I'm done. Hope you're enjoying the holidays! Take care! December 05 Bella's first 2 days.Bella's doing great! She hasn't had any accidents in her crate or in the house. I left her alone last night while I went to get a shower. She was lying on her blanket with her baby and toys. She has a remarkable fascination with our full length mirror. She charges at it and licks it. She thinks it's another puppy and just plays like you couldn't imagine. I can't believe how well mannered she is. She has been so good so far. She cried for 1/2 hour last night but I had to leave her in her crate as this was only her 2nd night in the house. I didn't need an accident in the house. She's such a joy to have around and LOVES to chase leaves. I'm going to post some pictures as soon as I can figure this thing out. Take care! December 03 Bella, Bella, BellaShe's heeeerrrrreeeeee! Bella is all mine and is doing great. We went to Mom's last night after picking up Bella. Her breeder was 3 hours away, but worth every minute and mile. Bella is a black and silver female Miniature Schnauzer. She will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. She's already "Mommy oriented" and loves her reindeer "baby". I got her a few squeaky toys, a blanket, new toys, leash, halter, fresh bowls, food mat and YES, I bought her some clothes. I ought to be ashamed, but she's gotten her first haircut and it was exceptionally cold last night. I got her a couple of sweaters, a t-shirt, and a dress. She stayed in my lap every minute that we were in the car. She's been doing well with the housebreaking which has been a relief. She's currently curled up on Hubby's side, both of them are fast asleep. I'll try to post some pictures soon. Believe me, we've been taking tons of pictures. It's been a long weekend and I'm exhausted. I have to work tomorrow so I'm off to bed. Take care!!!!! December 01 A Good FridayHappy Friday All!!! We are heading into the weekend with high hopes. We found a reputable Schnauzer breeder and she's got 2 females left. I called her last night to check and see if the "girls" were still there and they are! Whoo Hoo!!! The price is right and their house is near where my parents live so we are headed to see my parents tomorrow. Hubby and I are driving the ambulance in a Christmas parade and then we're headed out of town. We've had several calls about our 2 puppies and hopefully we can get them sold their new owners before we leave. If so, then we'll be good to go. Now I'm going to have to think of a sassy name for the new puppy.
Work is just great. I can't imagine doing anything else. You know how easy it is to become discouraged when all the excitement settles down and things become monotonous? Well, I still haven't seen a day that is the same as any other. Yes, it can get a little slow and tiresome but not really dull. Between getting my new expensive desk and chair, a few trainings and Christmas parties, I'll still be able to get my work done before I leave for Christmas vacation in 3 weeks.
We've already got the decorations up at home, but we haven't gotten the outside lights up yet and the Christmas Tree will have to wait until next week. Other than that, we are in good shape. Hope you all have a great and relaxing weekend! Take care! |
